What You Should Be Able To Do

    Interactive Study Tools

These tools are here to help students slow down and think about the method before rushing to an answer.

    Tool 1

    Study Planner

Use this to break a topic into small study sessions.

Plan: A clear breakdown will appear here.
    Tool 2

    Method Reminder

This quick guide reminds students what to do when they feel stuck.

    • Read the story: what is the question really asking?
    • Choose the method: identify the correct idea before calculating.
    • Show the reason: do not skip the logic.
    • Check the answer: make sure it fits the situation.

    1. Core Concepts & Definitions

Simple explanation: This section explains the geometry ideas slowly and clearly so students can understand both the picture and the reason.

Geometry in the Leaving Cert is built on a specific list of Axioms, Theorems, and Corollaries.

    • Axioms: Fundamental statements assumed to be true (the starting points).
    • Theorems: Statements that must be proven using axioms or previously proven theorems.
    • Corollaries: Statements that follow directly from a theorem.
    Examiner Tip
💡 Examiner Tip: You must know the 20 prescribed theorems in the syllabus. For Higher Level, be ready to prove them. For Ordinary Level, be ready to use them to solve problems ("cuts").

    2. Geometric Constructions

Simple explanation: This section explains the geometry ideas slowly and clearly so students can understand both the picture and the reason.

You must be able to perform these accurately with a compass and straightedge:

    • Bisecting an angle.
    • Bisecting a line segment.
    • Drawing a perpendicular from a point to a line.
    • Constructing triangles given SAS, ASA, SSS.

    3. The "Cut" (Reasoned Geometry)

Simple explanation: This section explains the geometry ideas slowly and clearly so students can understand both the picture and the reason.

When solving "cuts" (geometry problems), you must list your reasons. A statement like "AB = CD" gets 0 marks without a reason, e.g., "(Alternate angles are equal)".

    Common Mistake
❌ Common Mistake: Assuming a diagram is "drawn to scale". Never use a protractor to find an angle unless the question explicitly asks you to measure it! Always rely on the properties you prove.
    Exam Trap
⚠️ Exam Trap: Confusing "Converse" theorems. The converse of "If A then B" is "If B then A". They are not always true! Check carefully which direction you are proving.

    📝 Exam Style Questions

Simple explanation: This section explains the geometry ideas slowly and clearly so students can understand both the picture and the reason.

Easy Q1: State the reason why the sum of angles in a triangle is 180°.

    Medium Q2: Given a triangle with sides 3, 4, 5, prove it is a right-angled triangle.

A1: It is Theorem 4 (or derived from the properties of parallel lines and alternate interior angles).

    A2: Use the Converse of Pythagoras: 3² + 4² = 9 + 16 = 25. 5² = 25. Since 3² + 4² = 5², it is a right-angled triangle.
