To determine the concentration of an acid or base by titration.

3. Quick Theory

A titration measures the volume of one solution needed to react exactly with a known volume of another solution. The endpoint is detected using an indicator.

4. Apparatus and Chemicals

5. Step-by-Step Procedure

  1. Rinse the burette with the solution it will contain.
  2. Rinse the pipette with the solution it will measure.
  3. Pipette a fixed volume into a conical flask.
  4. Add a few drops of indicator.
  5. Run solution from the burette while swirling.
  6. Stop at the first permanent colour change.
  7. Repeat until concordant titres are obtained.

7. Student Common Mistakes

  • Overshooting the endpoint.
