2. Big Picture: Why Digestion Matters
Breakdown
Large insoluble food molecules are broken into small soluble molecules.
Absorption
Small molecules pass through the wall of the small intestine into blood or lymph.
Use
Absorbed nutrients are used for energy, growth, repair and storage.
Examiner secret: Digestion is not the same as absorption. Digestion breaks food down; absorption moves digested molecules into transport systems.

Absorption is the movement of digested soluble food molecules through the wall of the small intestine into the blood or lymph.
