Herbaceous plants usually have soft, green stems. Woody plants have stems with more lignified support tissue and wood formation.

7. Leaf Structure, Stomata, and Transpiration

The leaf is adapted for photosynthesis and gas exchange. Stomata allow carbon dioxide to enter, while water vapour can leave. Guard cells control opening and closing.

In Higher Level work, you should also connect transpiration to cohesion-tension: water molecules stick together and are pulled upward through xylem as water evaporates from leaves.

8. Plant Nutrition and Food Transport

Plants make carbohydrates in photosynthesis, store food in organs such as roots or seeds, and transport sugars in the phloem. Photosynthates are moved from sources to sinks by translocation.
